Caribbean Holdem Game Overview

Caribbean Holdem is based closely on Texas Hold’em, with a few key differences. Essentially, Caribbean Holdem is a slightly simplified version of the game. In addition to this, instead of playing against other players, you are wagering against the dealer. When playing online, you will also be playing on your own, but some versions might allow you to play up to three hands at a time. The goal of Caribbean Holdem Poker is to build a stronger Poker hand than the dealer.

How to play Caribbean Holdem

Players will be tasked with beating the dealer’s hand. The dealer’s hand will typically need at least a pair of 4s to qualify. We will go into what this means further down the page. Below is a step-by-step guide on playing your first few hands in Caribbean Holdem.

  • Step 1 – Players will begin the round by placing their initial bet, known as the Ante. Once the player makes their bet, the dealer will distribute two cards to the player and two cards to the dealer. The dealer’s cards will be placed face down.
  • Step 2 – Next, the dealer will deal three cards face up into the centre of the table. These are the first community cards.
  • Step 3 – Once the community cards are dealt, players will need to decide how they want to proceed. They can either:
    • Fold – Forfeit the round and lose their original Ante Bet
    • Call – Continue with the game. Players will need to place an additional wager. It needs to be twice the size of the initial Ante Bet.
  • Step 4 – Presuming the player stays in the game, an additional two community cards will now be added to the community cards. The player will now reveal their cards, and both the dealer and player will attempt to build the best Poker hand using their two Hole Cards and their choice of three of the community cards.
  • Step 5 – The game will determine whether the dealer’s hand qualifies. In most cases, the dealer’s hand will need at least a pair of 4s to qualify.
    • If the dealer’s hand does not qualify, your Ante Bet will be paid out according to the paytable. Your Call bet will be returned to you.
    • If the dealer’s hand qualifies and is stronger than the player’s hand, the player will lose both their Ante and Call bet.
    • If the dealer’s hand qualifies and is equal to the player’s hand, both the Ante Bet and Call bet are returned to the player.
    • If the dealer’s hand qualifies and is weaker than the player’s hand, the player’s Ante bet will be paid out according to the paytable, while the Call bet is paid out 1:1.

Caribbean Holdem Hand Rankings

Because Caribbean Holdem is a version of Poker, the game uses the traditional Poker hand rankings. However, if you have never played any form of Poker before, it can be quite confusing to know what makes a good hand. Below we have ranked the hands in Caribbean Holdem, from strongest to weakest.

Hand Description
Royal Flush A Hand that contains a 10, Jack, Queen, King, And Ace from the same suit

Tips and Tricks for Caribbean Holdem

If you are completely new to playing Caribbean Holdem, we have compiled a list of helpful tips. This will ensure new players use an optimal strategy without needing to remember any complicated rules. By following these tips, you can expect to Fold around 18% of your hands, while the other 82% will see you Call.

  • If you have a Pair or better, always call
  • Always call when holding Ace High or King High
  • If you have Queen High or Jack High, you should call. The exception is when the community cards are all the same suit, and you do not have any cards from that suit.
  • When holding a four-card flush draw or a four-card straight draw, always call.
  • If you have two overcards (two cards that are a higher rank than the community cards), then you should call.
  • You should Fold when the community cards are paired, and you have no cards that match the board or no cards higher than a 10.
  • Fold when you have low-value unpaired cards that don’t match the community cards and do not create a flush draw or straight draw.
