Online Roulette Glossary: A- E

  • American Roulette – American Roulette is one of the most common variants of Roulette, most commonly played in the United States. The wheel features 36 numbers, a Green 0, and a green 00. It has a higher house edge than other popular versions of Roulette.
  • Backtrack – The outer rim portion of the Roulette wheel where the ball spins before dropping into the wheel.
  • Biased Wheel – A term used for a Roulette wheel in a land-based casino that is faulty and not completely random. It can lead to certain numbers coming up more often.
  • Black bet – Betting that the wheel will land on a Black number. Black numbers account for half of the numbers on the wheel.
  • Block – A set of numbers you need to bet on for a particular Roulette strategy
  • Call Bet – A Call Bet that you call out once the wheel is already spinning. This is also known as an Announced Bet. Not all versions of Roulette allow Call Bets.
  • Chameleon Strategy – Players who attempt to copy the betting decisions of a successful player in the hopes of sharing in their success.
  • Column Bet – A column bet is when you bet on one of the three columns of numbers on the Roulette table. Each column contains 12 numbers and comes with a 2:1 payout.
  • Croupier – The name for the ‘dealer’ running the roulette wheel.
  • Double Zero – The additional Zero found on the American Roulette wheel
  • Dozen Bet – Similar to the column bet, you are betting on a selection of 12 numbers, coming with a 2:1 payout.
  • En Prison – A unique rule typically found in French Roulette. If you place an even-money bet like Red/Black, and the ball lands on 0, your bet goes into prison, and the wheel is spun again. This gives you another chance to win.
  • European Roulette – Perhaps considered the most traditional form of Roulette, with 36 numbers and a single Green 0
  • Even Money – Any bet that pays out 1:1, including Odd/Even and Red/Black
Common Terms used in Roulette

Roulette Terms: F – N

  • Five Number Bet – A unique bet in American Roulette where you bet on the first five numbers
  • French Roulette – A version of Roulette that uses the standard 36-number Roulette wheel with a single Green 0, but it features a different layout for the table, and some unique rules and betting options.
  • House Edge – The advantage a casino has over players. In European Roulette, the House edge is 2.7%, while American Roulette has a 5.26% House Edge.
  • High Bet – Betting on numbers between 19 and 36
  • Inside Bet – Bers placed on the inside of the Roulette table. These typically cover small groups of numbers or a single number. Inside bets are typically more difficult to win but come with higher payouts.
  • La Partage – Another unique rule typically used in French Roulette. It also applies to even money bets. When the ball lands on 0, you receive half of your bet back.
  • Line Bet – Wagering on 6 numbers, made up two rows of three numbers each
  • Low Bet – Betting on numbers from 1 – 18.
  • Marker – A chip or something similar that is used to mark your bets
  • Mini Roulette – A variant of Roulette that uses a smaller version of the Roulette wheel.
  • Multi Ball Roulette – A version of Roulette where two balls are used at once, giving you two chances to win.
  • No Action – In a land-based casino, if No Action is called, it indicates there was a problem with the spin. The spin is canceled and all bets are carried over to the next.

Roulette Glossary: O – Z

  • Orphelins – A unique bet on a set of numbers that are neighbors on the wheel
  • Outside Bet – Bets placed on the outside of the Roulette table. These typically cover large groups of numbers, making them easy to win, but the payouts are quite small
  • Parlay – Doubling your bet following a win
  • Pockets – The coloured and numbered compartments on the wheel where the ball can land
  • Red Bet – Betting that the ball will land on a Red number
  • Six Line – Betting on two rows of numbers next to each other, with a 5:1 payout.
  • Split – Betting on two numbers next to each other on the Roulette table, by placing your chips on the line between them. Comes with a 17:1 payout.
  • Straight Up – Betting on a single number. Comes with the biggest payout in Roulette, at 35:1.
  • Street Bet – Betting on one of the rows of three numbers on the Roulette Table. Comes with a 11:1 payout.
  • Trio Bet- This is another name for a Street Bet
  • Voisins du Zero – A bet on numbers that sit next to the 0 on the wheel.
  • Zero – A unique space on the wheel marked in Green. European and French Roulette have a single green 0, while American Roulette adds an additional Green 00.
