How to play Roulette – Step by Step guide

If you have never played a game of Roulette before, we have an easy-to-follow guide that will take you through each step of playing a round of Roulette.

  • Step 1 – The first step is to find a trusted casino site that offers a good selection of Roulette games. You can choose any of our recommended casino sites to be guaranteed an amazing Roulette experience.
  • Step 2 – Once you have chosen a casino, create your account and then deposit funds into your account. You can play without depositing funds using the free play feature, which is highly recommended for your first few games.
  • Step 3 – Now it is time to choose which version of Roulette you want to play. You will typically find three or four main versions of Roulette to enjoy. We will go through how to choose in more detail later.
  • Step 4 – Once you have chosen your Roulette game, it is time to start betting. Decide how much you want to be by clicking on the casino chips. Then click on the virtual Roulette table to place that bet. You can place multiple different bets for each round.
  • Step 5 – Once your bets are placed, click the spin button!
  • Step 6 – The wheel will now spin, and where the ball stops will determine which bets win or lose.
  • Step 7 – Winning bets will be paid out while the casino will claim losing bets.
  • Step 8 – Now it is time for the next round, place new bets and spin the wheel again.

Choosing your Roulette Version

As we mentioned in the steps above, when you head over to the Roulette section, you will find several different versions of the game. But, how do you know what one to play? What makes them different from each other? Below are some of the most popular and common versions of Roulette that you will find.

  • European Roulette – This is often seen as the standard version of Roulette. There are 36 numbered and coloured (Red or Black) compartments, from 1-36. Then there is a single Green 0 compartment.
  • French Roulette – French Roulette is very much the same as European Roulette. It uses the same wheel, but the table’s layout is different. There are also a few different rules that can lower the house edge.
  • American Roulette – American Roulette uses the same table layout as European Roulette. The wheel itself has one key difference. It has 36 Red and Black numbered compartments and the Green 0. However, it also has an additional Green 00 compartment. This extra 00 may seem like a small change, but it makes a big difference. It increases the house edge significantly.
  • Live Dealer Roulette – Live Dealer Roulette uses real croupiers and real Roulette equipment. A video is then streamed over the Internet to players. This creates the most authentic Roulette experience available online. You will typically find live versions of European and American Roulette.

So, which one should you choose? You should avoid American Roulette at all costs. Your odds of winning are significantly worse, thanks to that extra 00. While learning, you should also avoid Live Dealer versions. Due to their higher operating costs, these will likely have much higher minimum bet requirements.

That leaves European and French Roulette. These are by far the best options. Most casinos won’t offer French Roulette, or they will add the special rules to European Roulette. In most cases, European Roulette will be your go-to version of the game.

Roulette Strategies

When it comes to strategies in Roulette, players need to understand that this is a game of luck. Players cannot do anything to influence their chances of winning. Once you place your bet and spin the wheel, only luck will decide if you win or lose. However, there are several betting strategies to help guide your decisions. While these won’t improve your odds, they hope to make your money last longer and allow you to bet in a way to benefit the most from winning streaks and lessen the damage from losing streaks. We’ve got an entire page dedicated to Roulette Betting Strategies, but here are some of the more popular ones.

Martingale Roulette Strategy

This is one of the best-known strategies for Roulette. However, it is also one of the most aggressive ones out there and needs a big bankroll from the player to be effective. Players will make even money bets, like Red/Black or Odds/Evens, and when they lose, they will double their bet. This means that when they win again, they win back all their losses, plus their original bet.

So, if you start at AU$1, a losing streak will see you bet like this: 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256 etc. As you can see, it doesn’t take too many losses for your bet to grow significantly. The main issue with this betting strategy is that you need a massive bankroll to make it work, and you may run into a situation where the maximum bet allowed is not enough.

Be Less Aggressive

We generally recommend staying away from the Martingale Roulette Strategy and try something less aggressive. Instead of increasing your bet following a loss, try increasing after a win. In addition to this, there is no need to be so aggressive and double your bet amount. Maybe try increasing it by 50% after a win, and then reset to your base amount after a loss.

Just remember not to fall for the Gambler’s Fallacy. This is the belief that looking at past results can help players predict future results. If Red comes up ten times in a row in Roulette, some players will believe that Black has a higher chance of coming up next. This is simply not true. There is a near 50/50 chance red will come up or black when you spin. Previous spins play no part in determining future results. The odds are unchanged for every spin.

How to play Roulette – Betting Guide

The next part of learning how to play Roulette is learning the different betting options that are available. A general rule of thumb with Roulette bets is the higher the payout; the more difficult the bet is to win. There are two main categories of bets in Roulette, Outside Bets and Inside Bets.

Roulette Outside Bets

Outside Bets get their name because they are found on the outside of the table. These bets tend to involve betting on large groups of numbers. As such, they have good odds of winning and lower payout amounts. Below are some of the betting options in the Outside Bet category.

  • Red or Black – Players bet that the ball will land on a Red or Black number. This has a near 50/50 chance of winning and comes with a 1:1 payout.
  • Odd or Even – Betting whether the ball will land on an odd or even number. Also has a 1:1 payout
  • 1-18: Players bet that the ball will land on a number between 1 and 18
  • 19 – 36: Betting that the ball will land on a number between 19 and 36
  • Column Bet – There are three columns of 12 numbers: 1-12, 13-24, 25-36.

Roulette Inside Bets

Inside bets involve betting on smaller selections of numbers or even single numbers. The odds of winning are far worse, but the payouts are significantly bigger.

  • Corner Bet – Placing your chip in the corner between four numbers, betting on all four. numbers.
  • Five Line – Placing a bet on 0, 00, 1, 2, and 3.
  • Six Line – Betting on six numbers
  • Split bet – Placing a chip between two numbers, betting on both
  • Straight bet – This is the most difficult bet to win and comes with the highest payout. Players bet on a single number. It has a payout of 35:1

Roulette Payouts

Now that you know the two main categories of Roulette bets, and the bets available in each, let’s go through the payouts of these wagers.
