Types of Roulette Strategies

When we’re talking about Roulette Strategies, they can be broken down into two broad categories. These are Progressive Betting Strategies and Non-Progressive.

  • Progressive: With Progressive betting strategies, you will increase your bet after each round. If you increase your bet after a win, this is called a Positive Progressive. If you increase your bet after a loss, this is a Negative progressive.
  • Non-Progressive: The other broad category is called non-progressive betting or flat betting. With this betting strategy, you do not increase your wager after each round. Some of the most common flat betting strategies are James Bond and the 3-2 system.

Top Progressive Roulette Strategies

Let’s dive into the Progressive strategies you can use in Roulette. This list will include both Positive and Negative Progressive Roulette Strategies.

  • Fibonacci – The Fibonacci Roulette strategy is a negative progressive betting strategy, which means players will be required to increase the size of their bet following a loss. Players follow the sequence of increasing their bet by adding together the previous two bets. So, if you start at AU$5 and lose, you will then bet AU$5 again (5+0). If you lose again, you will bet AU$10 (5+5). Next would be AU$15 (5+10), AU$25 (15+10), AU$40 (25+15), and so on.
  • Labourchere – This betting strategy is a little more complicated and involves some input from players. Players will need to write down a three-number sequence. For this example, let’s say your sequence is 5-6-10. For your first bet, you will add the first and last number together and bet AU$15. If you win, you then cross off the first and last numbers in the sequence and bet the middle number, in this case, AU$6. If you lose, take your first bet amount and add it to the last number in the sequence, AU$15 + AU$10, and bet AU$25. Continue with this sequence of betting the middle number after a win and adding the previous bet to the last number in the sequence following a loss.
  • D’Almbert – The D’Almbert Betting strategy involves the player deciding on a base bet amount. And increase by this base bet after a loss. If you decide your base bet is AU$2, you will increase your bet by AU$2 after each loss. If you lose a string of rounds, your betting sequence would be AU$2, AU$4, AU$6, AU$8, AU$10 etc. When you win, you reset back to the base bet amount. This is a negative progressive betting system but is not as aggressive as some others out there.
  • Martingale – This is one of the best-known betting strategies out there. Martingale is a Negative Progressive Roulette Strategy, meaning you increase your bet after a loss. With the Martingale strategy, you double your bet after a loss. If you start with AU$1, the betting sequence is as follows: AU$1, AU$2, AU$4, AU$8, AU$16, AU$32, AU$64, AU128, and so on. The plus side of this strategy is that even after a long losing streak when you win, you will win back all your losses, plus your original bet. The drawback is that it is a very aggressive betting strategy, and it doesn’t take too many losses to require large bets to stick to the sequence.
  • Paroli – The Paroli Roulette strategy is, in many ways, the opposite of the Martingale. This is a positive progressive, meaning you increase your wager after a win. In this case, you double your bet after a win. If you bet AU$5, your sequence would be 5, 10, 20, 40 etc. Another change is that you always revert to your base bet after three wins. This stops your required bet from getting too large.
  • Reverse Martingale – For the true opposite of the Martingale, we have the Reverse Martingale. Here you double your bet after each win and keep on doing so. There is no safety measure, like Paroli, where you revert to the base bet after a certain number of wins. It is up to the player to decide when to revert back. Otherwise, a loss after several wins could wipe out all your winnings.

Best Non-Progressive Betting Strategies

Now let’s move on to Non-Progressive betting strategies that can be used for Roulette. With these strategies, you bet the same amount each round and do not change it. The two most common are the following:

  • James Bond – The James Bond Strategy involves players making bets that cover most of the Roulette wheel. It involves making 20 units of bets and will cover every number except 1-12. Placers need to place 14 bets on the Outside Bet 19-36 for a 1:1 payout, then five bet units on the six-line (13, 14, 16, 17, 18) for a 5:1 payout. Finally, place one bet unit on the single 0 for a 35:1 payout. You should win something on 2/3s of your spins, but the payout level will vary depending on which bets win.
  • Three-Two – For this system, players place two wagers, one even money bet and one column bet. The main feature of this bet is to make sure your betting ratio is 3 to 2. So you can bet AU$15/AU$10, or even AU$600/AU$400, as long as you stick to the ratio. Place the larger bet on Red/Black, and the smaller bet on one of the three column bets (1-12, 13-24, 25-26). This will cover 26 pockets on the Roulette wheel.

How to Use Each Betting Strategy in Roulette

Now that we have gone through all the different betting strategies players can use in Roulette, you may be wondering which system works best for which players. We’ve created a list of when each is best used.

Top Progressive – Perhaps the best Progressive Betting Strategy for Roulette is the Martingale. It ensures even after several losses; you will win the money back. However, it is not without serious risks. Your bets will increase exponentially, and you could lose your entire bankroll if you do not have the funds to cover the required bet.

Best for High Limit Tables – If you’re playing at a table with high betting limits, then we recommend using the Fibonacci Strategy. You’ll need a big bankroll and high table limits to use it properly, though.

Best for Winning Streaks – If you happen to get lucky and get a long winning streak, which strategy would be best for a winning streak? In this situation, the Reverse Martingale would benefit you the most. However, there is no way to know when the streak will come to an end. This is also an underrated strategy because when you lose, your bets are unchanged.

Best Strategy for Online Roulette – When playing online, spinning the reels can happen quickly and fast. This fast pace can quickly deplete your bankroll if you’re unlucky. For Roulette Online, we recommend the Labouchere Strategy. While this strategy isn’t super complicated, the extra maths the player has to do can slow the pace down a little.

Top-Rated Non-Progressive Strategy – If you do not want to change your bets each round and want to bet the same amount, the James Bond Non-Progressive Roulette strategy is your best bet.

Top Low-Risk Strategy – Some players want a good Roulette strategy that is relatively low risk. One drawback of many betting plans is how quickly the required bet increases. D’Alembert has players increase their bets incrementally instead of exponentially.  This helps to lessen the risk of needing to place large wagers.

Best Strategy to Secure Winnings – If you want the best Roulette strategy to secure your winnings, you should use the Paroli system. Your first four bets will follow the same pattern as Reverse Martingale, but after that, you revert to your base bet. This ensures the bets don’t get too big, and you lock in your winnings after a few wins.

How to Choose the Best Roulette Strategy

If you want to choose your own betting strategy from our list, then there are a few things we suggest considering in order to guide your choice. These are the important considerations we think players should make.

  • The Roulette Game – Before choosing your Roulette strategy, consider which version of Roulette you are playing. Unless there are any special rules, European and French Roulette offer the lowest house edge. We always recommend playing these two versions and avoiding American Roulette.
  • Betting Limits – It is also very important to check the betting limits of your chosen game. Certain betting plans will require large bets, so make sure you are playing somewhere that the table limits will not prevent you from making the required bets.
  • The Betting Systems – You will also need to consider whether you want to use a Progressive Betting Strategy or a Non-Progressive Strategy. Progressives place larger amounts of money on a single bet, while Non-Progressives spread wagers around the wheel. Non-Progressive strategies are probably best for high-rollers and low-stakes players. Those who want to use a Progressive Strategy should make sure they find tables with large betting limits.
